Frequently Asked Questions
At what age can a child start violin?
Usually around six, when the left-hand position becomes physically manageable. Violins come in fractional sizes, so the instrument should be matched to the child rather than bought in advance.
Is violin harder than guitar or piano?
The first few months are harder, because there are no frets or keys showing where the notes sit. That is also why violin builds the sharpest ear of the three.
Can adults learn violin from scratch?
Yes. Adults grasp the theory faster and need more repetition to build the physical habits. Several of our adult students started in their forties.
Do I need to buy a violin before starting?
No, and we would advise against it until the student has been measured for the right size. Studio instruments are used during lessons.
Can violin students take graded exams?
Yes. We are a Trinity Registered Exam Centre, so students can prepare in weekly lessons and sit Trinity exams at our centre. Exams are entirely optional.
